Advent is a time to prioritize God, overcome indifference, Pope says

On Sunday Pope Francis began the Church's Advent season saying it is a time to let go of the worldly distractions that take us away from God, and focus on growing closer to him through prayer and concern for others.

Referring to the day's readings, which stress the importance of being vigilant, the Pope said “the watchful person is one who, in the noise of the world, does not let themselves be overwhelmed by distraction or superficiality, but lives in a full and conscious way, with a concern above all for others.”

With this attitude, we quickly become aware “of the tears and necessity of our neighbour and we can also welcome the human and spiritual qualities and capacities,” he said, adding that an attentive person, “also turns to the world, trying to counteract indifference and the cruelty of it, rejoicing in the treasures of beauty that also exist and must be preserved.”

He focused his address on the day's Gospel reading from Mark, in which Jesus tells his disciples to “Be watchful! Be alert!,” because “you do not know when the time will come.”

Advent, he said, is a time given to us “to welcome the Lord who comes to meet us, to verify our desire for God, to look ahead and prepare ourselves for the return of Christ.”

ABBA Christmas Musical

By public demand, “Mother Mary” the musical version of the Christmas story with specially written words to the music of “Mamma Mia” is being presented again in Hinckley this year. First written and produced in 2010, it was presented to great acclaim also in 2011 and 2013, and has so far raised in excess of £8,500 for local charities working with people in need. A choir of 75 people and a group of people with learning difficulties will be presenting the 18 song musical, 7:30pm at:

St.Peter’s Church, Hinckley on Thursday January 14 and Tuesday January 19
St.Mary’s Church, Loughborough on Friday December 15
St.Joseph’s Church, Leicester on Monday December 18.

A unique ‘interactive’ feature of the production is that the audience are invited to sing the songs with the cast, who are at present very excited at the opportunity of presenting it again. Tickets are £5 for adults, £3 concessions and, because of generous sponsorship, the entire proceeds will be distributed to charities in Hinckley, Loughborough and Leicester just in time for Christmas.
