21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

VISITING PRIESTS:

This weekend we welcome two visitors to St Peter’s, Father Robert O’Callaghan and Father Kieran Monahan.

Father Robert was ordained four weeks ago at Blessed Sacrament and will take up his first appointment at our Cathedral in Nottingham during September. He has shared his journey to the priesthood with us on a couple of occasions during his years in seminary and it is good that we are able to share in the joy of his ordination.

Father Kieran spent much of his childhood and adolescence living in our parish and many remember him as an altar server. His vocational journey led him to the monastic life at Ampleforth Abbey where he is currently part of the hospitality team. Over the past few years some good links have been formed between our parish and the Abbey and Father Kieran has played his part in making that possible.

The presence of our visitors enriches us not just for this weekend but reminds us that we belong to a Church community that is bigger than just our own parish. Over the past few months we have also been able to welcome Father Wojtek who is from Poland but currently studying in Jerusalem and Father Andrew from Zimbabwe. Both of them were able to share something of the life of the Church in two countries which are well represented in our weekly gatherings. They both continue to keep in touch and hopefully our links will continue to grow and develop.

It has also been good to have Father David around in the parish during the month of August and at times it has seemed strange to me only having one Mass to celebrate on a Sunday when not that long ago I was rushing to celebrate three! However, come September things should settle down somewhat. Father David will resume his travels around the Diocese, and I will be with you for the two Sunday morning Masses on a regular basis. Hopefully I will have more time to talk with people (and also listen to them!) in between the two Masses and this will be of mutual benefit to us all.

Fr Eddy

GCSE Results

Congratulations to all our young people who received their GCSE results this week. We wish them well for the future.

Later this week, our schools will re-open for a new academic year. Our thoughts and prayers are with staff and students at this time.

Retreat

All priests are encouraged to make a retreat once a year. This doesn't always work out as planned, but Fr Eddy will be away on retreat this week until Friday afternoon. A retreat is different from a holiday or from in service training. It is a time for prayer and reflection and hopefully the retreatant returns not only rested but with renewed enthusiasm for their Christian life and ministry.

During Fr Eddy’s absence, Fr David will say daily Masses as announced in the bulletin. The presbytery and parish office will be looked after as normal by Bernice and Claire and between the three of them they should be able to ensure that normal weekly activities continue undisturbed. However if a priest is required in an emergency then please phone Mother of God (287 5232) or Holy Cross (255 3856).

Update on Bell Tower

The cross on top of the bell tower is unsafe and will need to be replaced with a new one. A new stainless steel cross is currently being manufactured. The scaffolding will remain in place until the old cross is removed and the new one installed.

Notice Boards

You may have spotted that the notice-boards have been re-arranged. Rotas and details of organisations can now be found on the “middle” board, with upcoming events appearing on the main board as usual.

The young people’s displays are on the right-hand board near the door, whilst the board over the bookcase will be used for ‘special occasions’ in the parish, such as First Holy Communion displays.

If you wish to have any posters advertising forthcoming events displayed, please hand them into the presbytery by Thursday evening, as the notice-boards are updated each Friday.

Flower Festival

This will take place on the weekend of 13/14 September. The church will be open on Saturday from 10.00am onwards and on Sunday will remain open after Masses until 4.00pm when we will have a special service to bring the festival to a close.

Saturday also coincides with the Leicestershire Historic Churches Ride & Stride day and we hope to welcome many visitors to the church and offer them refreshments. Volunteers will be required to welcome people and to prepare and serve refreshments. A sign-up rota will be available from next weekend. Donations of biscuits and small cakes would be very welcome.

The service at 4.00pm on Sunday will consist of readings, prayers and hymns and will be a suitable occasion to invite your friends and neighbours. There will be refreshments available afterwards.

If you would like to make a donation towards the cost of flowers in memory of a loved one, please contact either Eileen 233 0498 or Bernadette 299 3911.
