Give it up! for Lent 2010

Where it all began:  Lent 2010 marks the 50th anniversary of the first Family Fast Day in 1960, when a group of Catholic women joined together at Lent to do something extraordinary: members of the Catholic Women’s League, the Union of Catholic Mothers and the National Board of Catholic Women held the first Fast Day in aid of mothers and babies in Dominica.  They expected to raise £500, but actually raised a remarkable £6,000.  The next year they reached a staggering £27,000!  Every Lent since then, Catholics across England & Wales have teamed up with us to help some of the poorest communities in the World.

So that’s why the theme of Lent Fast Day this year is “give it up!”

Many of us plan to give something up for Lent, and it can be anything we want: biscuits, wine, or buying magazines. Just give it up! and donate whatever you save to CAFOD. We’ll turn it into lasting change for a child, a family or an entire community.

Please use the collection envelopes that you have been given / will be handed out at the end of Mass to give generously. And the leaflet attached to them tells you more about give it up! and the difference you can make.

Also, don’t forget to tick the Gift Aid box on your envelope – it means that for every £1 you donate, we can claim back an extra 28p from the taxman!
